Description
The British Museum Japanese Ukiyoe woodblock prints became popular in the West in the 1860s as trade links grew, inspiring a fashion for ‘JaponismÂ’; the typical use of flattened perspective, blocks of solid colour and strength of line in Japanese art went on to inform the ‘New ArtistsÂ’ of Art Nouveau and Impressionism, which sought a new approach to classical art. Reproducing mid19th century woodblock prints by masters Utagawa Hiroshige (17971858), Katsushika Hokusai (17601849), Kawase Hasui (18831957); alongside images by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (17971861), Utagawa Toyokuni (17691825), and Suzuki Harunobu (fl. c.172470).
