Description
The lights of New York City appear behind a serene Central Park bridge on a crisp, cold winter evening. Painted by artist Rod Chase from a series of photographic studies. Mounted in a brushed silver, traditional spoon frame. A liquid resin gel is applied by hand to the glass complementing key aspects of the print. The resin is clear and mixed with gold glitter to add that extra sparkle. The full effect of this hand finish is best seen in situ where the light reflects from the picture adding a subtle 3D effect to the image. Rod Chase's paintings begin with several monochromatic colour studies on an illustration board. While the painting is based on a single black and white photo, hundreds of additional digital photographs are used to help determine the composition and create additional detail. Next, the image is carefully drawn using both grids and freehand techniques. Using the photos as reference, he divides the painting into small sections, bringing each area to a finish before proceeding to the next. The acrylic paint is applied in thin layers so as to leave no visible brushstrokes. Occasionally, Chase will use an Iwata airbrush to soften the sky. As he advances, changes are made from the original photo, so objects are moved, values altered and detail added; thus producing a work that is superior to the photo. Each painting usually takes two months of full-time work to complete. It is not necessarily a photographic quality he's after but rather reality as viewed through a timeless window.
