The set includes Together by Norman Douglas, The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, Country Life by HE Bates and A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf. Penguin paperbacks were the brainchild of Allen Lane. Frustrated at the very limited choice of reading material at a station bookstall, Lane decided that good quality contemporary fiction should be made available at an attractive price, and sold not just in traditional bookshops, but also in railway stations, tobacconists and chain stores. The first Penguin paperbacks appeared in the summer of 1935. Costing just 6p, they were colour coded: orange for fiction, blue for biography, green for crime and so on.
