Bournemouth-based artist Michael Sole captures the energy of the sea in Black Venn, framed in ash wood. Michael Sole creates impressive large paintings, which walk the line between abstraction and landscape imagery. As part of his process, Sole immerses himself in the environments he intends to paint for weeks, living in a tent and walking for miles each day. The immersion into his subject provides the artist with moments of contemplation and opportunities to capture the energy of nature, which then informs his painting back at the studio. By pouring, dripping, throwing, and shaking paint, Sole approaches the act of painting as a performance which conveys the energy he witnessed in the great outdoors. As he puts it: Nature is fascinating to me, especially in extreme circumstances such as storms. Energy must meet with energy in painting. Big seas and powerful subject matters deserve energetic physical and confident painting. Such consideration on the physicality of painting resonates with the principles of abstract expressionism at play in Jackson Pollock's artworks. It's this focus on energy that enables the viewer to see known landscapes in a completely different light. As such, the strength of Sole's practice is to explore and re-invent the medium specificities of paint while at the same time offering an immersive experience to the viewer. Yet, Sole skilfully combines the heritage of abstract expressionism with his recent fascination for Post-Impressionism, and more specifically Van Gogh. Michael Sole sees the Dutch painter as a perfect example of letting the viewer feel the artist's presence. Inspired by this approach, Sole aims at transmitting the state of mind and thoughts he experienced while creating artworks. His images then become self-portrait which bridge gaps between different painting traditions.
