Printed for the exhibition 'Workshops of Modernity' at the Maeght Foundation in 2005, this lithographic print is presented in a contemporary black box frame, ready to hang on a wall. Ellsworth Kelly exhibited his works for the first time at the Maeght Gallery in 1958 and formed a close connection with the foundation, producing many original lithographs for Maeght's publications. It was, in fact, inspiration from walking in the Maeght's garden that he created a painting 'Red, yellow, blue' and a series of original lithographs featured in this exhibition poster. Since 1965, his work has grown and developed through two series: a series of 27 original lithographs, in which Kelly uses colour in different combinations and in which the centre is always occupied by the same abstract form; and a series all in black, inspired by flowers and gardens. Kelly's passion for contour and silhouette encourage him to sketch almost continuously. Le jardin des plantes in Paris, right under the windows of his workshop, is one of his favourite subjects. He draws plants constantly, with a thick, simple line, perfectly organic in its rhythm, yet also austere. From time to time, the image of a painting emerges from these contours. An image suggested not by the leaf or the stem, but by space. Ellsworth Kelly was one of the young American soldiers who benefitted from a scholarship, lasting the same amount of time as the time he served. After a war that brought him to Normandy in 1944, he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-arts de Paris. He knew, at the heart of the Ecole de Paris' circle of influence, how to use a physical, artistic vocabulary, which fully developed upon his return to New York. Galerie Maeght is a gallery of modern art in Paris. The gallery was opened in 1946 by renowned art dealer and collector Aimé Maeght.
