Description
Christmas cards reproducing elegant 19th century engravings of geisha enjoying the snow. Includes a geisha with a sledge sheltering from a sudden tumble of snow; taken from ‘Winter’, from ‘The Four Seasons’, an Edo period woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, c.1843, now in the collection of the British Museum. Alongside an unattributed 19th century woodblock print of a geisha holding a snowball. Female beauties and daily life were popular themes of the Ukiyoe (‘pictures of the floating world’) genre and the graphic style went on to influence many Western artists, notably the French Impressionists.
