Description
Gifted to the Victoria and Albert Museum from the Pilgrim Trust’s ‘Recording Britain’ project, a delicate watercolour by Clifford Ellis (190785) of ‘Sion Cottage, Sion Hill, Bath’, 1943. The wartime ‘Recording Britain’ scheme, led by Sir Kenneth Clark of the National Gallery, sought to employ artists to capture the changing face of the urban and rural landscape and to boost morale. Over 1500 works were created and touring exhibitions took the collection far and wide. The pictures now form a memorial to the war effort, and a unique record of their time.
