3dimensional Nativity scenes are thought to have been inspired by a living tableau created for a Mass by St Francis of Assisi in 1223 at Greccio in Italy. The tradition developed, becoming the Italian presepio, meaning before the crib: elaborate dioramas with the Holy Family are joined by intricate models of buildings, animals and all manner of everyday people and activities.
