Museum Selection Herons in a Winter Landscape Cards
Description
Exquisite triplefold cards reproducing a scene of herons in a winter landscape, adapted from an unattributed Japanese sixfold screen. Symbolising longevity and good fortune, a pair of herons are depicted fishing in a river, set within a snowy landscape. The opulent goldcoloured background of the original ‘byobu’ (meaning ‘wind wall’) became popular in the Edo period (16031868) as increasingly decorative and dramatic designs were created as eyecatching interior designs and status symbols.
