Symbolising good cheer and feasting, the figure of ‘Old Father Christmas’ became popular in the troubled aftermath of the English Civil War, representing a more peaceful era of goodwill. Having been, largely, forgotten after the Restoration of 1660, the Victorians revived this convivial personification of feasting and merrymaking; gradually becoming the bringer of gifts in the tradition of the American Santa Claus.
