Foam Rollers are used for self-myofascial release in physiotherapy, Pilates, yoga, general fitness and rehabilitation. Whilst the Body Sculpture Foam Roller is similar-looking to standard foam rollers, it contains a slightly harder inner centre that ensures added durability, but it also has a slightly softer outer for added comfort. The added benefit of having a harder centre means that the rollers are more durable and will not flatten or distort under extensive usage, whilst the softer outer is more comfortable, ensuring maximum exercise effectiveness. Self-myofascial release, also known as “foam rolling”, helps to release muscle tightness or trigger points. Trigger points are specific “knots” that form in muscles; releasing these trigger points helps to re-establish proper movement patterns and pain-free movement. Stretching is not always enough to release muscle tightness. Imagine a bungee cord with a knot tied into it and then envision stretching the cord. The stretching will only stretch the unknotted portion of the muscle; the knot, however, remains unaltered. Foam rolling assists in breaking up these muscle knots, resuming normal blood flow and helping with recovery.
