Being very breathable and lightweight, the Proton jacket can be used as a mid-layer as part of a layering system when it's really cold, or as an outer layer when you're more active. Warmth, even when wet, comes courtesy of the Coreloft Compact 80 insulation, and it'll dump any excess heat if things start to get a bit intense - it's a bit like a tent in that way. And yes, don't worry - it'll still repel water and is definitely tough enough to put up with the abuse that climbing and mountaineering have to offer.
