Description
Christmas cards reproducing a sumptuous miniature and illuminated border from a Flemish Book of Hours, c.151020, now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The miniature depicts the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, surrounded by an opulent border decorated with flowers, a peacock and pheasant. The angel holds a banner that reads AVE GRACIA PLE, which stands for Ave gratia plena (Hail, full of grace), the greeting inspired by the words of the Gospel of St Luke that became the basis for the Hail Mary prayer of intercession.
